(Ottawa, ON) – Following the announcement that a trade agreement has been reached between Canada, the US, and Mexico, Canada’s retail auto industry welcomes the newly signed agreement by North American countries.
“We thank Canada’s trade representatives, the Prime Minister and his Office, and Ministers Navdeep Bains and Chrystia Freeland for the outstanding job they did in engaging auto stakeholders, fighting for Canada’s auto dealers, and for understanding the vital importance of Canada’s auto sector,” said John White, CEO and President of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association. “Through the combined approach of CADA’s efforts here in Canada, the auto industry delivered the unified message that auto tariffs are bad for consumers, dealers, and the economy on both sides of the border. Clearly the message sank in loud and clear.”
“Canada was placed in a unique position where the U.S. President targeted the Canadian auto sector very directly and publicly. Canada’s 3,200 dealers and the 156,000 Canadians they employ nation-wide stood to lose tens of thousands of jobs as a result of auto tariffs,” added White. “Canada’s negotiating team recognized the significance of Canada’s auto sector and the implications these tariffs would have on the entirety of the Canadian economy, and worked hard to ensure that autos were exempt from Section 232 in order to protect Canadian consumers, businesses, workers and economy.”
