As kids return to school and the summer officially winds down, cooler weather will soon be upon us – and dare I say, the winter season will be here before we know it. And now is actually the perfect time to get ahead of everyone else. Early preparation not only ensures your safety on the road but also provides several other benefits that can save you time money, and stress.

The first reason is obvious to any savvy shopper, regardless of the product — shopping for snow tires in early fall guarantees access to the best selection and pricing, especially at your local new car dealership. As winter draws nearer, the demand for snow tires increases, which can lead to limited availability and higher prices. By shopping now, you can get the jump on fellow drivers and take your pick from a wide variety of brands and models before inventory drops and prices increase.

New car dealerships are aware of this and often launch promotions and discounts at the start of the fall season, making it an excellent opportunity to find a good deal. Additionally, early shopping gives you more time to research and compare options, ensuring you make an informed decision without the panic of last-minute buying when the sleet and snow begin to fall.

Once you’ve purchased the tires, you still need to get them on your vehicle. And just like last minute panic-shopping causes big lines and low inventory, dealerships are often also packed with customers rushing to get their winter tires installed once winter officially hits. By taking care of your tire needs now, you can avoid the rush and book an installation appointment at a time that’s convenient for you.

Installing your snow tires before the winter rush also means your vehicle will be ready to handle early winter conditions, which, in our province, can sometimes arrive unexpectedly. A proactive approach guarantees your vehicle is fully prepared for any sudden changes in the weather.

It’s also important to remember that snow tires aren’t just for driving on snowy roads—they are specifically designed to perform better in all cold weather conditions. When temperatures drop below 7°C , the rubber in all-season tires begins to harden, which reduces their effectiveness. Winter tires, on the other hand, are made from a rubber compound that stays flexible in lower temperatures, providing better traction, braking, and handling on cold, wet, or icy roads.

In British Columbia, winter tires or chains are required on many routes, effective October 1, while in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island where rain is prevalent, it’s worth noting that winter tires are specifically designed to enhance performance in wet and icy conditions, making them ideal for all winter weather.

The improved control and stability offered by snow tires can make a significant difference in preventing accidents, especially during those unpredictable weather days common in British Columbia.

Shopping for snow tires early allows you to take advantage of the best selection, avoid installation delays, and enhance your safety and confidence on the road. As winter approaches, having your tires sorted out early means one less thing to worry about, allowing you to enjoy the season safely.
