Summer in BC means road trips, vacations, and outdoor adventures. However, the last few summers have shown that the heat also brings unique challenges for your vehicle. Being proactive in caring for your vehicle by ensuring your ride is in top condition can prevent breakdowns and keep your journeys enjoyable and stress-free. However, there are some essential maintenance tips that will keep your car running smoothly all summer long.

As temperatures rise, ensuring your air conditioning system works properly is essential for comfort and safety on the road. Instead of attempting DIY fixes, consider visiting your dealership for professional maintenance. Addressing AC issues early can prevent discomfort later on. If your AC is blowing warm air, a quick refrigerant recharge could resolve the problem and restore efficiency. However, if the issue persists after adding refrigerant, consulting with a dealership mechanic ensures a thorough diagnosis and effective solution. Trust the experts to keep you cool and your drive enjoyable this summer.

Tire maintenance is another vital aspect of summer car care. Winter’s harsh conditions can affect tire pressure and overall condition. Before embarking on a long summer drive, check your tire pressure to ensure they are neither under- nor overinflated. Check the details on your tires to find the proper PSI. An added bonus to properly inflated tires: improving your fuel efficiency, which makes your summer road trips more affordable. And always inspect your spare tire before a long trip, especially if you’re heading up North or into the interior where phone reception and service stations may not be accessible for long stretches.

Fluid levels in your car also require careful attention as the weather heats up. Extreme heat can cause engine fluids to become thin or evaporate. Key fluids to check include transmission fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and windshield wiper fluid. Coolant in particular is crucial during summer as it prevents your engine from overheating. Checking and topping off coolant levels is a simple process: open the hood, locate the coolant reservoir, check the indicator lines, and add coolant if necessary.

Changing your oil and filter is one of the easiest ways to extend your vehicle’s life. Oil lubricants protect your engine from wear and tear, while the oil filter removes contaminants from the engine oil. Neglecting regular oil changes can lead to particle buildup, which can damage engine components and lead to costly repairs. A good rule of thumb is to change your oil every 8,000 – 12,000 kilometers, but always refer to your car manufacturer’s guidelines for specific intervals.

Brake performance is another critical area to monitor, especially after a harsh winter. Your brakes are essential for safety, so regular checks are important. Listen for any unusual noises such as squealing or growling and pay attention to how your car behaves when you brake. If you notice poor stopping performance or if your vehicle pulls to one side, it’s time for a professional inspection and potential repair.

While summer might seem like an easier season for vehicle maintenance compared to winter, it presents its own set of challenges. Ensuring your car’s air conditioning, tires, fluids, oil, and brakes are in optimal condition can make your summer drives safe and enjoyable. With a bit of preventive maintenance, you can hit the road with confidence, knowing your vehicle is ready for whatever the summer has in store.
