Summer is done, and winter is still months away, so bring on the crisp weather, early sunsets, and of course, the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of British Columbia’s many forests. Whether you’re a seasoned road tripper or simply looking to escape for a weekend, our beautiful province offers some of the most scenic fall drives in the country. With a stunning variety of coastal cruises, winding mountain tracks, and lush forestry roads, BC is a prime destination for experiencing autumn’s beauty.

But where to go for your first seasonal road trip?

No list of fall drives in BC would be complete without the iconic Sea-to-Sky Highway. Stretching from Vancouver to Whistler, this drive offers awe-inspiring views of Howe Sound and the Georgia Strait, towering mountains, and lush forests bursting with colour. As you wind your way along this scenic route, be sure to take advantage of the many pullouts to capture photos of the dynamic landscape reflecting on the sea.

Heading inwards, the Okanagan Valley is well-known for its wineries and warm climate, but fall is also an excellent time to explore this region by car. The valley comes alive with autumn colours, offering a picturesque backdrop to its rolling vineyards and glassy lakes. A drive along Highway 97 from Penticton to Kelowna is a must, and along the way, you’ll pass through charming small towns like Summerland and Peachland, where you can stop to sample local produce and wines. For those looking to extend their drive, consider heading towards Osoyoos, where the desert landscape meets fall’s vibrant tones in a unique display.

The Kootenay Rockies are a renowned route when it comes to road trips in any season, but the drive along Highway 95, from Golden to Radium Hot Springs, is especially captivating during autumn. This route takes you through valleys and alongside rivers, with the iconic Rocky Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. If you have time, make a detour to Kootenay National Park, where the Marble Canyon and Sinclair Canyon hikes offer opportunities to get closer to the stunning fall foliage. As a bonus, you can finish your trip with a hard-earned and relaxing soak in the Radium Hot Springs, surrounded by the popping hues of Autumn.

For those who prefer a coastal drive, Vancouver Island offers a more temperate fall experience. A popular route is the Pacific Marine Circle, which takes you from Victoria to the rugged west coast of the Island. The drive through the Cowichan Valley and along the Juan de Fuca Strait provides a stunning mix of coastal views and forests in transition. Be sure to hit up Port Renfrew and explore the ancient trees of Avatar Grove, where the contrast of soaring old growth meets the autumnal foliage of Red Creek Fir’s smaller cousins.

No matter which route you choose, BC’s fall drives offer world-class views, drives, and hikes. From coastal highways to mountain passes, our province’s diverse landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable autumn road trip. So, pack your camera, grab a thermos of hot coffee, hit the road and explore the beauty of fall in British Columbia.
